Sportfishing - Weakfish
Weakfish, sometimes referred to as Sea Trout, is a migratory species occurring over the entire Atlantic Coast, but predominantly from New York to North Carolina. Weakfish winter toward the south then move north in the spring to spawn in the bays during much of the summer. They provide excellent fishing in the back-bay areas and inlets, as well as in the coastal ocean all summer. Weakfish is a good eating fish served frequently in restaurants.
Weakfish
The Weakfish has a bright silvery body with small dark spots and some greenish color, especially high on the back. The primary dorsal fin is peaked, like a mountain, while the secondary dorsal is long and of even height. The mouth of the weakfish is large with a protruding lower jaw and small teeth, although two larger canine teeth may be visible. It is the mouth that gives the weakfish its name, because the fleshy parts are soft and will tear when caught on a fishhook. Most fish are caught in the bays and inlets, from piers and boats, during tidal change. They are also present along the ocean coast in the surf or slightly offshore. It is the larger weakfish that migrate further north where fish over 15 pounds are sometimes found. Most fish are 2-6 pounds, although 10 pounds is not uncommon.
