Ocean Yachts Modern Models

Ocean Yachts survived the economic troubles of 1990-91, but they didn't sell too many boats in 92 or 93. The 32 and 35 footers were dropped, and the 38 soon would be, creating a product line of 40 feet and up. The entire product line was revised with an updated look, modern electronics inside and out, and the new larger diesel engines buyers wanted. Hidden beneath the water, hull designs changed too. The flat aft sections were given new moderate-V shapes to handle more ocean water conditions and to improve the ride. Ocean still favored a lessor V than some of the competition, like Viking, but new larger engines allowed for at least some modified-V while still achieving the desired performance. With the 53 Super Sport Ocean broke 40 knots. Ocean also began using newer, lighter, more fuel-efficient engines for increased performance and range. The Ocean Yachts model line would include the Super Sport line of convertible sportfishing models, the Sport Fish line of express fishing models, and several motoryachts.

40 Super Sport

1997-2005. This new 40 Super Sport, introduced in 1997, carries the same model designation as Ocean Yachts' very first boat of 20 years earlier. This is a much improved and updated design. By 1997 hull designs were evolving with "twin lifting strakes" and "double chines" advertised for this model. The new hull with modern engines provides speeds over 30 knots with standard power. Inside the 40 Super Sport provides two staterooms below and a large salon up with galley equipment, a dinette table and salon seating. The cockpit features ample room for fishing, built-in equipment storage and optional freezer, baitwell and outriggers. Available power includes twin diesels 420-460 HP from CAT and Yanmar.

42 Super Sport

1991-1995. The 42 Super Sport was a very successful model that carried Ocean Yachts through the 1990s. Weighing in at just over 35,000 lbs, it was still light for a 42 footer, and produced 25-30 knots with the typical 485 HP diesels. The interior includes master and guest staterooms and a single head. All other features are found in the main salon, including an L-shaped dinette and galley. Available power was twin 485 HP Detroit Diesels.

48 Super Sport

1995-2003. The 48 Super Sport introduced in 1995 replaced previous models of the same size. The new design was built on a completely new hull with a 16 ft beam and improved underwater design. It was also designed to accept larger horsepower engines producing 30-37 knots. Inside, the increased beam gave designers more room to work. With sleeping capacity of 6-8, this model is available in two or three stateroom arrangements. The galley and a dinette table are located in the salon on the main deck. Ample seating is available on the flybridge. The cockpit includes the fundamentals for fishing and room for cruising. Options include outriggers and a fighting chair. Available power is twin diesels 660-825 HP from CAT, MAN or Detroit.

52 Super Sport

2001-2006. The 52 Super Sport was designed to replace the 53 Super Sport with a smoother ride. Ocean had been working on hull design with some success and wanted to add those changes to this model size. The changes also got the bow down to cut into rough water even better. Inside provides sleeping for 6 in three staterooms with three heads. A complete galley is down a couple of steps from the salon but within sight. A dinette table is located near the galley at an L-shaped lounge providing seating on two sides. The cockpit is well appointed for fishing with standard freezer, sink, live baitwell and transom door. Outriggers and fighting chair are optional. Available power from a choice of manufacturers is 800-1015 HP.

53 Super Sport

1991-1999. The 53 Super Sport was developed to replace one of the original Ocean Yachts models, the 55 Super Sport, which was just the third model created by Ocean back in 1981. The new 53 Super Sport provided an updated design for the 90s, an improved hull, and increased strength to support the much larger engines. Inside an abundance of fine teak furniture, cabinets and structure provided a comfortable atmosphere. The front windshield was glassed over on this model and reflected in the interior design, unlike the model it replaced. Available power was 820-1000 HP.

56 Super Sport

1999-2002. The 56 Super Sport is distinguished from earlier models, in part, by the flush foredeck, where the trunk cabin of earlier models has been removed. Perhaps to emphasize the expansive foredeck, the bowrail appears extremely limited on this model. The cockpit too, seems a little small for a 56 footer, although there is certainly enough room for several people and for fishing, even with a fighting chair. Inside the 56 Super Sport includes 3 staterooms and 3 heads. A complete galley and dinette table with partial seating, even on this 56 footer. Available power is twin diesel 800-1050 HP.

57 Super Sport

2002-2007. The 57 Super Sport may be the first model with the new Modified-V hull form. It replaced the 56 Super Sport. All previous models had quite flat aft sections with only 3 or 4 degrees of deadrise at the transom to enable the advertised speeds, especially with the earlier engines. The modified-V form provides a smoother ride and better handling in more sea conditions, but requires more power to achieve the same speeds. Engine size on the 57 has increased with horsepower ratings up 25-50%. Inside the 57 Super Sport includes 3 staterooms and 3 heads. A complete galley and, rare for Ocean Yachts, a booth style, although tapered, dinette. Available power is twin CAT, MAN or MTU diesels 1015-1500 HP.

60 Super Sport

1997-2001. The 60 Super Sport was introduced in 1997 to fill a hole in the model line between the 53 and the 66 Super Sports. It was wider than the 53 too, with a beam of 17 feet. Inside it offered 3 or 4 staterooms and 3 heads, plus a complete galley and settee along the window with a dinette table. It offered plenty of room for fishing on a large and stable platform with good speed for a large boat, as is typical for Ocean Yachts. Available power was about 1100-1350 HP.

66 Super Sport

1993-1999. The 66 Super Sport was introduced in 1993 as the 60 footer was discontinued, leaving the 53 Super Sport as the next smaller model. Quite a spread of 13 feet. The 66 Super Sport spent its entire life as Ocean Yachts largest yacht of the time, until it was replaced by the 70 Super Sport. The 66 offered a wide 17ft 8in of beam providing tremendous room inside. The design included 4 staterooms and 4 heads, a complete galley with an oven, and a dinette with three-sided permanent seating with room for 6-8.

70 Super Sport

2000-2004. The 70 Super Sport was introduced in 2000 to replace the 66 Super Sport. It adds four feet of length and two feet of beam. The interior volume offers very spacious accomodations. Sleeping is provided for 9, with 4 staterooms and 4 separate heads. The large galley includes a dishwasher, trash compactor and 4-burner stove in addition to the usual equipment. An enclosed flying bridge is standard, although an open bridge is available as an option. The bridge has seating for about 10 people and includes an inside stairway to the salon. Available power is CAT or MTU diesels of 1500-1800 HP.

44 Motoryacht

1992-1999. The 44 Motoryacht represented the smallest of its class in the Ocean lineup during nearly all of the 1990s. It was built on the hull of the 44 Super Sport that had just been discontinued. This was a nice motoryacht in the Ocean Yachts tradition with a master stateroom in the aft cabin with a private head. Two more staterooms were located in the forward part of the boat. The covered cockpit area was above the aft cabin and a flybridge provided controls and room for all. Typical power was twin 485 HP Detroit Diesels giving 25-28 knots.

48 Cockpit Motoryacht

1993-1999. The Cockpit Motoryacht design concept was novel, maybe unique to Ocean Yachts. It attempted to provide an open cockpit area and accessable swim platform on an aft-cabin motoryacht. To create this 48 Cockpit Motoryacht, Ocean Yachts took the 44 Motoryacht and extended the hull about four feet without basically changing the cabin, engines or propeller locations, which remain recessed the extra four feet! The interior remained the identical size of the 44 Motoryacht with the same beam. The added four feet was designed as a cockpit. Though a little small for a cockpit, it provided a nice spot for light fishing or lounging closer to the water, as well as access to the swim platform. Standard power was twin 485 Detroit Diesels producing 21-27 knots.
