Egg Harbor Modern Models

We include in the "Modern Era" the boats of each builder from about 1990, or after the Luxury Tax fiasco, to the present - excluding current models. This period was a tough time for Egg Harbor. They entered bankruptcy and produced few boats in 1990, and almost none in 1991 or 1992. They resumed production in 1993 but closed down for good in 1997, producing no boats in 1998 or 1999. A new investor bought the company in 1999 but it was 2001 before production resumed. Egg Harbor has been in limited production since.

34 Golden Egg

1990-1995. The 34 Golden Egg was a new boat designed with an updated look to replace Egg Harbor's very first fiberglass model, the 33 footer, still in production. The new 34 was released in 1990, as Egg Harbor entered bancruptcy, then closed down for 1992. It resumed production of this model in 1993 for a couple of years but the disruptions hurt sales and few are ever seen. The 34 included a solid front windshield, which would become the standard in years ahead, as well as curved side windows. This model has the same beam as the 33 being sold alongside it in the early 1990s but is heavier and offered slightly larger engines in both gas and diesel. Gas engines of 350 HP and Cat Diesels of 375 HP were offered, although smaller engines were used in the later years when production resumed, probably to allow more attractive pricing.

35 Golden Egg

1995-1997. The 35 Golden Egg is an updated version of the 34 Golden Egg, which it replaced, and is essentially the same underlying boat. The deck may be extended slightly at the bow with the addition of a bow pulpit, perhaps justifying the extra foot of stated length. The actual changes include a redesign of the deckhouse and flybridge, with teardrop shaped side windows tapered aft. The redesigned interior improves both appearance and functionality. The 35 Golden Egg is available in both single and two-stateroom layouts. The master stateroom in the bow includes a centerline queen berth with access on both sides. The second stateroom, down to port, offers bunk beds and is an alternative to a lower, U-shaped galley. When the second stateroom is included, a galley is laid out along the port side windows in the saloon. There is no dinette available, but one or two countertops with barstools are included in different layouts. Power is provided by twin diesels from CAT and Volvo at 350-370 HP, producing speeds of 22-28 knots.

38 Golden Egg

1990-1997. The 38 Golden Egg was introduced in 1990. This model includes a solid front windshield and fair-size cockpit with sink and cabinets for fishing and other supplies. The flybridge helm station is aft-mounted with seating forward for guests. This is a two stateroom, single head design. The master stateroom, forward, includes a queen-size centerline berth. The guest stateroom had crossing bunk beds. The galley is located on the lower forward level to port and includes a medium size refridgerator, 3 burner stove and a large stainless sink. A countertop with stools borders the galley and is the only built-in dining space. Power is provided by gas or more commonly by diesel of 400-485 HP producing speeds to 28 knots.

42 Golden Egg

1990-1997. The 42 Golden Egg was introduced in 1990 along with the 34 and 38 Golden Eggs. It replaced both the 41 and 43 SportFisherman which ended the previous year. The 15 foot beam of the 42 Golden Egg was slightly larger than either previous model. The hull design is improved and strengthened to provide more speed and larger engines. The layout of the 42 Golden Egg is similar to the other Golden Eggs introduced at that time. It is a 2 stateroom, single head layout with a full galley down to port. An entertainment center is mounted high in the forward starboard corner of the saloon, in front of the solid windshield. One option with the 42 is the introduction of a small corner dinette in front of the entertainment center, instead of the counter on the smaller models. The port-side counter bordering the galley is retained. Some models are seen with this counter extending aft along the port window wall. Early models are almost always seen with Detroit 6-71s at 485 HP producing 24-28 knots. In later years the optional Detroit 6v92s at 550 HP produced 26-30 knots.

42 Sport Yacht

2000-2003 The 42 Sport Yacht was offered when Egg Harbor reopened for business in 2000. This model is an evolution of the 42 Golden Egg being sold when Egg Harbor shut down in 1997. It is the same hull and layout as the earlier model but with some substantial upgrades. The interior is upgraded with newer equipment and appliances as well as changes like a granite floor in the galley to match the corian countertop. Whether this makes sense on a boat is another issue, but you may find it attractive. One important design change is relocating the engine room access outside to the cockpit, a requirement that had become more common by 2000. Power is also updated with a wider choice of newer, larger engines up to Cummins QSM11s at 660 HP pushing this boat to almost 40 knots.

52 Sport Yacht

1997-2005. The 52 Sport Yacht was probably Egg Harbor's most successful yacht over 50 feet. Although they also produced a 54, 58 and 60, fewer of those are seen. The 52 was a beamy boat at 16ft 4in, not really large for a 52 but larger than the smaller Eggs. It was well flaired in the bow. The hull shape was pretty flat and shallow at the transom, especially with the broad beam. Inside were 3 large staterooms. The master stateroom was located on the starboard side featuring an athwartships walk-around queen berth with night stands, and a private head and shower. The forward guest stateroom offers a centerline queen berth, and the third stateroom provides bunk beds. A second head in he forward hallway also serves as the day head. The main saloon is large and open with the galley on the same level forward and to starboard, while an L-shaped dinette is forward to port. Power for this large boat varied from 625 CATs in early years to 1050 MANs in later years producing speeds to 35 knots.

58 Golden Egg

1991-1998. The 58 Golden Egg, came out just as Egg Harbor was entering bankruptcy in 1990, and finally died when Egg Harbor ceased operations in 1997. In between they provided a top-end for Egg Harbor's attempts to survive. Not too many of these are seen but they are nice, modern boats that evolved through experience with the Golden Egg line that promoted the luxury of boating. The 58 Golden Egg has a similar layout to the 52 Golden Egg with three staterooms and two heads. Likewise, the saloon, galley and dinette are laid out on a single level that expands the perception of size. The hull has a broad beam and low deadrise providing enhanced speed. A number of engine options were available, from 900-1250 HP producing to speeds just over 30 knots.
